Morris emerged from a courtly dance craze that made the leap from the nobility to the ordinary people of England in the late Middle Ages. The choreographer Giovanni Gallini described these folk dances in his 1762 Treatise on the Art of Dancing as being performed “by persons oddly disguised, with a great deal of antic rural merriment.” It may not have been intended as a compliment, but it’s an energy we can definitely get behind.
